Waiheke Weather

wx

Waiheke Island Airfield is located about 20nm from Auckland International (NZAA or AKL). However the weather can be quite different, particularly as the island is to the East of Auckland in the Hauriki Gulf. Much of the weather Auckland experiences rolls in off the Tasman Sea to the West, this carries large amounts of precipitation, which promptly gets dropped on New Zealand's West coast and Auckland. As a result the weather Waiheke experiences is significantly dryer and a couple of degrees warmer than that of Auckland city.

As the Waiheke Island Airfield is on a ridge line with phenomenal views all round, it can get some tricky winds funneling up the ridge. Some people reckon you can get crosswinds from both sides at the same time! Suffice to say that landing at the airfield is not difficult, you just need to respect the prevailing conditions.

Here is a good site for NZ aviation weather forecasting including TAF's and METAR's

In the right sidebar are some actual current conditions for Auckland International Airport as well as a 5 day forecast. Unfortunately the weather Guru's have not got round to doing an individual forecast for our little airfield, dunno why, maybe we don't have the traffic density to justify it.
